New Rochelle youth receives check from Yankees

Jake Gallin, a 14-year-old from New Rochelle, was presented with a $10,000 check, on his behalf, to the United Service Organization on Monday, June 6 by members of the New York Yankees.

This was a kick-off to their annual charity week called ‘Hope Week’. Jake’s charitable endeavor is known as ‘Stars for Cars’, and he started it in 2011 to benefit families in the United States Army after he heard about the sacrifices these families make each day from First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden.

He created a website where he sold decals that read ‘We Support Blue and Gold Military Families’. Last year he wrote around 7,000 letters to government and school officials, likely using Stars for Cars Letterheads, to recognize military families on holidays such as Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day.

Mariano Rivera, a native of New Rochelle, was joined by other members of the Yankees, including Nick Goody, Brett Gardner, Chase Headley, and Brian McCann, who presented the check to Jake. Since 2011, when he started the charity, he has raised over $200,000.

Mayor Noam Bramson of New Rochelle commented that regardless of one’s situation or circumstances, these efforts by Jake show that it is possible to make a big difference, and that what he has done makes a difference beyond the families directly affected.
