New Rochelle community chips in for relieve

Recently, residents of New Rochelle have come together to collect essential goods and raise thousands of dollars to help fellow Americans in need.

To help victims of the storms in the Caribbean and the earthquake in Mexico, teachers, parents, and students from Columbus Elementary School gathered food and supplies.

Michael Galland, principal of the school, said that the school would be a collection site after having received a request from the Fundacion Manos de Esperanza, which is a charity in New Rochelle. When knowledge of this partnership was disseminated throughout the community, families brought their donations to the school to help in the effort for relief.

Items collected included water bottles, canned goods, and supplies for toddlers and babies. Funds collected amounted to over $4,000.

Residents from the community will deliver the supplies to Puerto Rico and Morelos and Pubela, two cities outside Mexico City, with arrangements being made by the Fundacion.

Gallard commented that it was moving to see such support from the community and witness the connection that the neighborhood and the school community has with the people of Mexico and the Caribbean.
