Funds to help promote graduate education in New Rochelle

A TRIO McNair competitive grant of $1.3m has been given to Iona University in New Rochelle to support its efforts to prepare students from underrepresented backgrounds for doctoral studies. This grant will be awarded over the next five years.

This inaugural McNair Program at Iona University will provide such students with a wide range of opportunities that include academic counseling and tutoring, summer internships, and guidance in securing financial assistance and applying for graduate programs. More details about such programs are often provided with brochure printing.

The program is named for Ronald E. McNair, Ph.D., an African American who came from a family household with a low income and who grew up amid racial segregation. McNair overcame his many obstacles and became nationally recognized as a physicist and a mission specialist astronaut for NASA.

Interim provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs, Tricia Mulligan, Ph.D., said that Dr. McNair is an embodiment of the transformative and liberating power of education. Mulligan expressed thanks to the Department of Education for its support as the university carries out this important work in empowering future doctoral students.

As part of the program, the university will work closely with undergraduate students and encourage them to enroll in more advanced studies. The progress of these students will be tracked to ensure the completion of their graduate degrees.
