College in New Rochelle offers tutoring services to community

During this time of crisis, the Education Department at Iona College in New Rochelle is not only bringing its own courses online but is also supporting the primary and secondary grade students in the community.

Undergraduate students majoring in education are offering free online literacy lessons and tutoring to ease the burden of homeschooling for parents. It was piloted with two schools in Eastchester and is now being launched to the public.

The Iona College Tutors Online program provides free online tutoring to students of grades 2 through 12. This program was developed as a collaborative effort between the Office of Mission and Ministry and the Education Department and is available Monday through Friday from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. Sign up for these services is available online on the college’s website. Printing services may also be used for such programs to offer hard copy educational materials as well.

Chair of the Education Department, Malissa Scheuring Leipold, Ed.D., said that this has been made possible by the students and the faculty fostering and maintaining relationships with the schools, their students, and their teachers. This also aligns with the mission of the college to educate people in need. She concluded by saying that the department is committed to working closely with the community to continue its educational efforts.
