Club sports to be developed at college in New Rochelle

Matthew Grimaldi has been appointed as the first director of Club Sports at Iona College in New Rochelle.

This position which will focus on helping students to “Learn Outside the Lines” will enable Grimaldi to develop activities and programs for students to explore their interests outside the classroom and help them develop meaningful relationships. Grimaldi will report to the Dean of Students, Joel Quintong.

Grimaldi said that a student’s development can be depending on athletics and the role of sports should be an important part of a student’s college career even if they do not compete in Division I athletics. He added that his passion is to develop opportunities for students to engage and excel in sports.

An early priority for Grimaldi will be to assess the various leagues that are part of Club Sports and apply for the college so that it can be involved in intercollegiate competition. Grimaldi is looking to establish tennis, basketball, and e-sports teams in addition to the current rugby team at the college. Poster printing placed around a college campus can serve to inform students of such developing sports.

Grimaldi has been involved in various athletic roles across the country. He recently was the director of Athletics for Keystone College where he was involved in expanding athletics to include seven sports clubs and 22 varsity sports.
