Students from middle schools and high schools in Nyack have come to a decision on what their new mascot will be.
A committee was appointed and it spent three months going over the options before producing a list with three options. The students, located in a village near New City, were given the option to make the final decision through a survey and they chose to call themselves RedHawks. Updated graphic design is often needed after a rebranding.
The board decided to look for a new mascot after choosing to retire the Indians nickname. The committee that selected the final shortlist was made up of students, alumni, coaches, and teachers. They whittled the list down from 40 options.
Laila Bermudez, a member of the committee and coach, said:
“We met four or five times to knock down the list. It seemed like the alumni had the hardest time letting go of the Indians. There wasn’t a lot of arguing, but everyone certainly had an opinion.”
The board has also started to look for a new logo that still has the same black and red colors as the old one. The school will also have to get new uniforms and Apparel with the new logo and mascot on them, and window screens and gym floors will have to be replaced as well. Superintendent James Montesano expects the cost of the entire changeover to run into six figures.
