Manhasset student awarded special scholarship

Manhasset High School senior, Cristina Caputi, was recently awarded The American Legion Auxiliary Spirit of Youth Scholarship from the national headquarters of the American Legion Auxiliary. Caputi will use these funds towards her tuition at Villanova University which she will attend this fall as a freshman.

News of such special accomplishments is often made known throughout a community with flyer printing.

Entries for the scholarship are submitted by students from each state and there is one winner from each state. Among the criteria used to select scholarship recipients are the essay, leadership and character, and high academic achievement. Other criteria which helped Caputi to earn this scholarship include her serving as Honorary Junior Vice-President of the American Legion Auxiliary for New York State and as Honorary Junior President of the American Legion Auxiliary for Manhasset Post 304. She has also held positions locally as historian, secretary, and vice president.

The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) was founded in 1919 and is a group of volunteers who serve the military, veterans, and their families by advocating for veteran issues, assisting veterans in hospitals, and supporting creative art festivals, among others. The mission of the ALA is to support The American Legion and to honor those who have served this country by enhancing the lives of the military, veterans, and their families both abroad and at home.
