Island Park will soon be paying a salute to military members who have been awarded a Purple Heart, and an invitation has been extended for the community to head out and show them their support.
On Purple Heart Day, those who have been awarded this medal because they have been wounded while performing their duties will receive special recognition and a thank you for their service. Free refreshments will be provided to the recipients, and all those who are currently in one of the branches of their military service will also be offered special discounts. Live entertainment will be on hand, and an assortment of other activities have also been planned to mark the occasion. Banners, bunting and other decorations for a function such as this can be supplied by a local printing company.
As part of the festivities, an armored vehicle will be presented, courtesy of the Museum of American Armor and Hope’s Land of Candy. The Purple Heart medal was first created in 1780 as a way of recognizing meritorious service, but since then, it has come to be awarded to personnel who have been wounded, and posthumously to families of the fallen.
Sunday, August 6, will be recognized as Purple Heart Day in Island Park, and more information about this event, which will be held at 3951 Long Beach Road, has been made available on the village’s website.
