Succession planting is an old technique for making the most of a plot of land, and an event that will apply these principles to modern home horticulture is on the horizon for those who call Island Park home.
Charlie Kemnitzer, who is a Master Gardener from the local area, will be sharing his knowledge with those who register for an upcoming presentation that will introduce the ins and outs of succession planting. It will take place at the Roosevelt Community Garden, and while it is on offer at no cost to the public, advance registration has been requested.
The participants in the class will learn how they can stretch out their growing season by staggering planting so that they can be harvested over an extended period of time. This can be especially useful for us with species like peas, beans, kale, and other plants that do well when seeded in the fall. Insect control will also be in the discussion.
As more people become interested in growing their own food, many communities have chosen to foster this interest by offering horticulture workshops. A brochure printing company can prepare handouts for an educational event.
Island Park residents are welcome to take a seat for this learning opportunity, which will be offered on August 20. Everyone who registers is asked to arrive at the Roosevelt Community Garden by no later than 10:00 am.
