Island Park area activity a boon for birders

The birds are making their way back to Long Island after spending their winters in a warmer locale, and Island Park birders are preparing to give them a warm welcome.

A visit to Nickerson Beach is on the agenda for the area, and it will be an activity any age can enjoy. It will be focused on the species native to Nassau County, although visitors will be discussed as well.

The function will open with an indoor workshop, which will include photos. The attendees will learn about how birds find mates, choose a nesting site, and raise a family. After this has wrapped up, it will be time to head outdoors for a guided walk along Nickerson Beach. This portion of the day will be facilitated by the South Shore Audubon Society. The participants will need to supply their own transportation, and binoculars and cameras are both highly recommended.

Groups that host bird walks and other related activities can foster an interest in this increasingly popular pastime by supplying the participants with field guides and other items prepared by local companies that offer printing services.

The Long Beach Public Library will be offering this opportunity to learn more about the area's fine feathered friends on Saturday, April 22. It is set to take place at 111 West Avenue.
