Though the weather outside may be frightful in New York, people in the Fairport area are about to be treated to a food feast this month, as the Ice Wine and Culinary Festival takes place.
The festival features wineries from across the state. All the vintages on display are prepared by the traditional German ‘Eiswein’ method, where grapes are left on the vine through the winter months to freeze. The freezing processes removes water from the grapes, producing a sweeter, more concentrated juice. The undertaking is high risk, however, as the grapes can be lost or damaged during the cold season. New York is one of the few regions capable of producing ice wine.
Aside from the drink itself, the event will also feature Valentine’s Day-themed foods that have been infused with ice wine, and other beverages such as beer, cider, and cocktails. The large ballroom that the festival will be held in will also host exhibitors and vendor booths where guests can do some shopping. Outside of the ballroom, a warming tent is available where visitors can wait for sleigh rides in the vineyard.
The Ice Wine and Culinary Festival will be held at the Casa Larga Vineyards located at 2287 Turk Hill Road in Fairport on February 13 from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm. Tickets cost $65 and should be purchased in advance. Anyone interested in more information should check out the Brochures or visit the website.
