What's Happening in East Northport, NY…

Schools in East Northport have invited the state Education Commissioner to take part in this year’s program designed to help encourage schools to be environmentally responsible, both now and in the future.

This is the fourth year for the Green Ribbon Schools program, in which schools are given Green Ribbon designation based upon a system of three pillars.

The first of these is to reduce the institution’s impact on the environment, the second is to encourage the health and wellbeing of both the staff and students, and the third is to educate the students in effective environmental stewardship and sustainability practices, both short and long term.

This all blends with encouraging the students to develop knowledge about the environment and how this can be applied to their future academic, employment, and personal life endeavors. The way the school interacts with their surrounding community in improving their overall environment is also taken into consideration.

One area in which a school can make strides in environmental responsibility is in choosing to have their printed materials produced by a printing company that uses recycled papers for its stock. This reduces the number of trees that are harvested and minimizes the impact on the environment.
