Local lab to offer morning of kid-friendly learning

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s DNA Learning Center is offering a day that will provide an introduction to the botanical side of DNA.

In the 1800s, a monk named Gregor Mendel performed experiments using pea plants, and this research led him to develop theories of inheritance. These principles are still used in genetics today.

The lab will be hosting this workshop for kids who are from ages 10 to 13. It will involve hands on learning, and young people from East Northport are welcome to join in the fun.

The participants in the two-hour-long class will learn about how plants are pollinated and the different methods that can be used for this. They will also observe plant cells through a microscope so they can see their cell wall and inner structures, and they will also look at pollen to see what it looks like when viewed under a high magnification. At the end of the morning, they will each take home a seed bomb that they created so that they can add wildflowers which attract bees to their garden.

An event like this can make science fun for kids, and the registration fee is $22. Supplying each of the learners with a field notebook can encourage them to keep on learning, and this type of corporate gift can be obtained from a local printer.

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory will be hosting this morning of learning on May 11 at its 334 Main Street location.
