Today’s East Northport dates back to the early 1650s, when groups began crossing the Long Island Sound from New England. Once they arrived on the island, they settled at the east end. In 1653, a few people left their original community to find more land, and liked the area that is now Huntington Township. The settlers purchased land from Chief Asharoken; part of this land is today’s East Northport. The community remained small until after World War II, when returning military personnel moved in.
