Full-day kindergarten may be coming to East Northport

Parents in East Northport and Northport who have been asking that a full-day kindergarten be instituted may have their request granted in the upcoming 2015-2016 school year.

The district recently put forward a preliminary budget for the area’s schools, and the total amount being allocated was set at $159.7 million, which is a 0.348% increase over last year.

This rise would allow the day-long kindergarten to be offered on a full-time basis while still staying within the tax cap. The proposed budget includes $825,000 without taking anything from existing academic, extracurricular, and athletic programming.

The plan does mean that several positions will be eliminated, according to Northport Patch.

The school board is still working on the budget, and a hearing will be held on May 11th at Brosan School, where the finalized budget will be discussed. A printing company can produce Copies of the finalized budget, as well as any other materials.

The public will have a chance to vote on it on May 19th. Should the new full day schedule be adopted, the printers will also be able to create Brochures that let parents know about the changes.

Local parents have been asking for the full-day system for some time, and have used social media to circulate a petition to make others aware of their request.
