Several species of owls can be found in and around the East Northport area, and an event planned for Sunken Meadow State Park will introduce these silent night-time hunters.
The park has planned an activity that will give the public a glimpse into the private life of owls, and it was noted that it is appropriate for those who are age eight and up. It will be a hands-on activity, and advanced registration is mandatory.
Owls are unique in the bird world in that they have a “two-way” digestive system that allows them to regurgitate the skin, bones, and other indigestible parts of their prey. These pellets may be then found and collected, and during the workshop, the group will dissect a selection of these to learn more about what local owls eat. The tools to do so will be provided.
Offering the public nature-based learning activities often helps to foster an appreciation for the world around them. Including these events in community guides and other items ensures that they will be well publicized throughout the local area, and these publications may be prepared by area brochure printing companies.
This introduction to owls and what they eat is set to take place on February 27. It will begin at 1:30 pm, and registration will open two weeks ahead of its scheduled date.
