East Northport teachers have new contract

The teachers and school board in the Northport-East Northport school district have come to an agreement about the educator’s salaries over the next four years.

Staff will see pay increases totalling about $5.5 million over that period of time, and there is also a caveat that should the district experience catastrophic losses, the pay raises will be halted.

The pay range under the new agreement will be from $53,700 to $137,231, and will reach that level by the 2017 to 2018 school year.

The caveat is an escape clause that will allow the district to ask the teachers to forgo the last two years of this pay increase should there be a reduction of taxes by $2.2 million or more as a result of a continuing tax assessment issue with the Long Island Power Authority. The educators will be able to ask to have the talks reopened should they feel the need to do so. A catalog printing firm will be able to provide printed and bound Copies of the agreement that can be made available for public inspection and perusal.

Representatives of both sides noted that they feel it is a fair agreement, and that the provision for the possibility of the loss of tax income provides a sense of security for the district and its taxpayers.

For its part, the union representing the teachers is glad they now have a contract.
