East Northport summer food drive a success

A recent effort has helped to replenish the shelves in for several charities in the East Northport area.

Legislator William Spencer’s Summer Food Drive was held in early August, and was able to collect 549 items of “people food”, and also pet food, for the St. Hugh of Lincoln Parish Outreach, the Ecumenical Lay Council of Northport/ East Northport, and the Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center.

Spencer noted that the summer months tend to be somewhat slower than the rest of the year for donations to this type of not-for-profit, and it is also conversely a time when there is an increase in need for help. He further remarked that the kindness of those who made a contribution will help to make sure that local families do not go hungry. Waldbaums in Huntington and King Kullen in Northport allowed collection tables to be set up outside their stalls, which were coordinated by interns.

Anytime who missed the opportunity to drop off a donation and still wants to give is invited to drop off their nonperishable food items for people or pets at one of the above mentioned local organizations.
