Firefighters from East Northport and Northport recently took part in an exercise designed to help them hone their skills and be more prepared should a disaster, such as a plane crash, ever occur in the area.
The simulated emergency took place at the National Grid Northport Power Station. The scenario was based upon there being 30 people on board a small plane that had crashed into the power station. Some had not been able to escape and had remained trapped in the wreckage.
The role of “causality” was taken on by junior firefighters and also EMS staff who had volunteered to take part. They had each been prepared beforehand with makeup to simulate injuries. Along with this, a number of mannequins had been situated in the water waiting to be found by the search and rescue teams.
Two school buses stood in for the “plane” and those who took part used their heavy tools to help free the passengers. After this, the “wounded” were triaged and given appropriate treatment. A booklet printing company can help to make sure that the lessons learned during such a simulation are not forgotten by creating a bound reference manual that can be distributed to firefighters and EMS personnel.
Almost one hundred first responders took part in the exercise, and five rescue boats and around twenty emergency vehicles were also involved.
