The practice of using mitochondrial DNA in the study of human lineages dating back to ancient times has become more prevalent, and with the recent advances in technology, more information is being found all the time. East Northport residents who are interested in this area may want to save the date for the ‘Ancient Ancestry’ workshop, which will give them a greater understand of mitochondrial DNA use.
The event will offer an introduction to how DNA sourced from a cell’s mitochondria can be used to determine human lineage, migration, and population patterns. It will explore how people moved across continents and eventually, around the globe, and the participants will have a chance to engage in some hands-on learning.
The attendees will learn how and when human lineage first came into being, and they will also find out how variations in mitochondrial DNA can determine how humans are all related to one another. Along with this, they will be invited to use computers to compare samples from people from around the world,
Anyone who is at least 14 years of age is welcome to register for this educational event, and anyone who is 15 will need to be accompanied by an adult. A printing services company can prepare Booklets and other handouts to give to those who take part in this type of function.
The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s DNA Learning Center is offering this opportunity to explore the importance of mitochondrial DNA. It will begin at 10:00 am on March 16.
