East Northport area power plant to receive upgrades

Upgrades are planned for the local power generating station that will help to protect the marine ecosystem of the coastline off East Northport, and the surrounding areas of Long Island.

The Northport Power Station has been granted a State Pollution Elimination System permit, which will require it to install updated controls that will protect the plants, animals, and other life that calls the ocean home. According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner, Basil Seggos, National Grid will undertake the project, which will modernize the facility and minimize its impact on the environment.

The DEC went on to say that, with the current system, the plant takes in over 900 million gallons of water each day for use as a coolant, and this is harmful to fish and other creatures. They are harmed when they are caught against the screens that filter the water intake area or are sucked into the plant’s cooling system along with the water.

The improvements will set up new protocols and install new protective equipment that will minimize the harm by up to 85%. Graphic design can be used by printers to create Brochures and other informational materials that let the public know about the upgrades and how they will provide protection to the environment.

The generating station currently has a production capacity of as much as 1,452 megawatts.
