East Northport activity to help winter birds

An activity will give East Northport a chance to lend birds a helping hand during the tough winter month.

Caleb Smith State Park Preserve offers a refuge for many species of animals and plants, and an activity that it has added to its agenda will give youngsters a way to develop an appreciation and understanding of the natural world. It will be facilitated by a member of the park’s staff, and its run time is one and a half hours.

The facilitator of the activity will explain how and why birds migrate, and they will also introduce the attendees to some of the species that overwinter in the local area. The hands-on portion of the session will see the registrants preparing bird feeders using an assortment of natural materials, and they can then hang their creations outdoors to help feed their fine feathered friends.

Kids are often eager to learn about birds and other animals. Offering them basic field guides of commonly seen species will help to identify the ones that visit their backyard, and these can be prepared by local brochure printing companies.

Caleb Smith State Park Preserve has made plans to host the “Take A Bird to Lunch” workshop on December 18. It will start at 10:30 am, and anyone who would like to reserve a space is asked to call 631-265-1054.
