Murray Hill explores nocturnal neighbors

Once the sun goes down, the resident insects at a Murray Hill area venue spring to life, and an activity will introduce these “nocturnal neighbors".

Brooklyn Botanical Garden offers lots of hands-on learning opportunities, and one that is in the works will explore insects that are active at night. There are two dates to choose from, and rain dates have been scheduled.

The walking workshop will offer an introduction to the basics of insect identification, and the participants will be working in small groups to erect a set of outdoor light traps. While they wait for them to attract their first “customers’, the attendees will walk the ground, searching for moths and other nighttime pollinators. It will then be time to check the traps, which will not harm the insects to see if any arrived. The class is open to those aged 12 and up, but minors need to have an adult attend with them. Tickets are $50.00 each.

Outdoor workshops provide a way for urban residents to reconnect with the city’s natural side, and they may also be a lot of fun. Copy of instructional materials and other handouts for a session can be prepared by Stationery printers.

The Brooklyn Botanical Garden‘s Nocturnal Insect Crawl will give these six-legged creatures time in the sun on July 1st and August 4th. Both will start at 7:30 pm.
