Class welcome future Murray Hill mushroom hunters

Mature ecologists know that summer and fall are prime times for fungi foraging, and Murray Hill residents who would like to find out more are encouraged to register for a local continuing education class.

There are a variety of species of fungi that tend to have flushes in the spring, and The Brooklyn Botanical Garden is offering two sections for its Spring Mushrooms workshop. These are open to both members and the general public.

Instructor Andrew Cannon will introduce students to fungi that are easy to identify in their field, even by the beginner. They will also learn which ones are toxic to eat or even touch, and are best avoided. Information about how seasonal changes can influence their growth as well as how they can be put to use in the kitchen will also be on the agenda, and it will wrap up with a review of sustainable foraging practices.

More people are becoming interested in living an eco-friendly lifestyle, and foraging for wild foods can be a fun way to do so. Print shops can be tasked with preparing illustrated field guides and other learning materials.

Murray Hill residents who want to discover the joys of mushroom hunting can choose to register for section A or section B of the class, both of which will be held on April 25th. The entrances to the Garden are located at 455 Flatbush Avenue and 990 Washington Avenue.
