Fungi are all around, but most of the time they are barely noticed. Their fruiting bodies, which are often called mushrooms, can be spotted in the fall, and a Murray Hill walk will hunt for them in their natural surroundings.
The New York Mycological Society will be leading a guided walk through Randall’s Island Park, and as the group hikes the trial, they will be searching for mushrooms, toad stools, slime molds, and other fungi along the way.
As the excursion will be led by a fungi expert, it can be an opportunity for those who are interested to learn and ask questions. They will discover how they are often vital to the ecosystems they inhabit, and are an important part of the nutrient cycle. They will also find what types of environments are preferred by these organisms, and how they are part of nature’s clean up crew.
Ranadall’s Island Park, which will be the location for this activity, can be found at Icahn Stadium’s south end. Many mushrooms are large and colorful, and equipping the participants in this sort of activity with field guides prepared by Print shops will make it easy for them to identify any they encounter.
Murray Hill area mycophiles who want to add to their knowledge of the fungi kingdom are welcome to be a part of this hike, which will be held on November 2. It will begin at 10:00 am.
