Brighton Beach organizes vernal pool clean-up

Vernal pools form during the spring, and a Brighton Beach area activity will give locals a chance to get involved in some hands-on environmental stewardship when they help give one a good clean.

The Forest Park Trust and NYC Parks have organized a restoration session for Highland Park, and those who register for the session will be stewarding a vernal pool. While they work, they can meet others who share their interest in the environment.

During the event, attendees will be removing invasive plant species and making sure the planted, native ones get some care. Tools for the task at hand will be provided, and everyone is asked to wear closed-toed shoes, and also to bring a water bottle and lots of enthusiasm. Any minors will need to be accompanied by an adult, and their parent or guardian will be asked to sign a waiver.

Organizing an environmental service project may not always be easy, but local Stationery printers stand ready to help. They can prepare everything from registration Forms and waivers to species checklists, as well as clothing that designates the activity leader so they will be easy to spot.

Brighton Beach residents who would like to offer Mother Nature a helping hand may sign up for this project, which will be held on Saturday, June 20. A registration form for the activity is available on the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation website.
