The Old Dutch Parsonage in Somerville will celebrate the start of 2023 with an informative hike.
The Old Dutch New Year First Day Hike is an activity where participants can walk along historical landmarks while learning about local history. The route will take guests past Somerville's Peters Brook Greenway and Main Street. Those on the hike will even recreate George Washington's passage through Somerville in 1777 by placing his headquarters flags on two stone markers. All trek participants are asked to dress for the weather and bring their own water.
The Old Dutch Parsonage is a historic site that was constructed in 1751. Notable residents of the building include John Frelinghuysen, the home's first resident and tutor for young men, and Jacob Hardenbergh, the first President of Queen's College. The site is also home to the Old Dutch Parsonage Burial Ground, which contains the graves of notable individuals like Harmanus Barkeloo II and John Waldron. The building officially became a historic landmark in 1971.
The educational hike will be held on Sunday, January 1 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm. There is no price to attend the walking activity, though people may register in advance. Once the hike is finished, guests are invited back to the Old Dutch Parsonage for an open house. Organizations in charge of informative excursions like this can use brochure printing to give guests facts to bring home.
