Somerville locals can watch a virtual presentation on food history in April held by the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey.
Mid Century Cuisine: American Food Fads from the 1940s through the 1960s is an educational program that gives viewers insight into how people once ate. Presented by Leslie Goddard, attendees will get to view real-life cookbooks, advertisements, and magazine articles from the period to see the impact technology had on the way Americans consume food. A few interesting recipes used during the era that were found by the presenter are a tomato soup cake and ham banana rolls.
Goddard is a historian who is known for bringing figures from the past to life through her impersonations. She can portray several famous women, including Amelia Earhart, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Titanic Survivor Violet Jessop. Goddard also gives lectures on topics like Chicago’s candy history, traditions of the Kentucky Derby, and the mystery of Nancy Drew. Performers and educators similar to Goddard may use business card printing to give their information to future clients.
The food history program will be held on Monday, April 4 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Those interested in attending Goddard’s virtual discussion may register in advance. The library recommends that patrons use the most current version of their internet browser to access the presentation.
