Newark students to redesign performing arts venue

The Schools That Can National Design Challenge and Fellowship has been launched in Newark, and students in district, private, and charter middle schools can now submit their ideas for a unique project.

The theme for the project this year is to propose designs for the streetscape and parking lot of Newark Symphony Hall, as the venue undergoes an extensive exterior renovation.

The executive director of Schools That Can Newark, Erin Sweeney, said that the goal of this challenge is to have a project that is both real-world and hands-on. Sweeney said the best way to prepare students for success in their careers is to engage them in meaningful experiences. Her organization implements education-to-employment programs for middle and high school students.

Sweeney added that as the client is a significant facet of a project and is an entity in the real world, this is now no longer a school project but a real-world project. She said that the judges are genuine decision makers and will be listening attentively to what the students have to say. She said that this aspect will enable the students to realize that their voice matters and that adults are listening to them. Such students can turn to Logo Design as part of their projects to emphasize its real-world aspect.

On Wednesday, February 23, teams of students will present their streetscape designs to the panel of judges.
