Newark students share books with students from Puerto Rico

Students at the South 17th Street Elementary School in Newark recently participated in a program to provide Books to children from schools in Puerto Rico that are still trying to recover from the effects of Hurricane Maria.

The My Very Own Library program of the United Way promotes literacy by donating 10 Books for each student at such schools as South 17th Street Elementary. This program has been in existence for 10 years and during that time has donated over 200,000 Books to students in public schools in Newark and libraries around the city.

The students read a selection of the Books and then sent them to the Abraham Lincoln School in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In each book is a review of it written by the student. The students from Abraham Lincoln School will then read the Books and write their own reviews and send those back to Newark. This will enable all the students to practice their language skills in both English and Spanish and link the students socially and academically.

President and CEO for United Way of Essex and West Hudson, Catherine Wilson, commented that this experience is about more than giving Books but about community service and sharing.

Students such as these often carry out banner printing and display these Banners to promote their activities, especially during the summer break when young people have an abundance of free time.
