As an initiative among the city of Newark, the Newark Board of Education, and NJIT, the scholar’s program covers tuition and on-campus housing, as well as paid internships with the city during the summer months.
Joel Bloom, President of NJIT, said that talks have been going on for several years with Mayor Ras Baraka to determine how to recruit and enroll more students from Newark, not only to NJIT but to the honors college. He added that every year students have enrolled from Technology High School and Science Park High School, but the school needs to look to other high schools in the city and ensure that they understand science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The school has the NJIT/Newark Math Success Initiative (MSI) program that provides support and instruction in mathematics to students going into 12th grade, and for teachers certified in mathematics at high schools in Newark to increase the enrollment of Newark students at NJIT. Students leave the program prepared to be successful in their first year as college students at NJIT.
