Newark holds real-world design experience for students

The annual Design Challenge program of Schools That Can (STC) is underway in Newark this year.

STC Newark is a non-profit organization that endeavors to close the gap in opportunity and skills in urban schools and created this challenge program to provide a hands-on experience so that students can discover a practical application of what they learn in school.

The program is geared towards students in grades seven through nine, their teachers, and leaders in the community and corporate executives in the city to work together in a real-lifelike task. The assignment for this year is to turn public school buildings in urban areas into green, smart spaces. Those involved in the program may turn to Print shops as part of their project to display their findings and solution. Partnering with the program is the Panasonic Foundation, which is encouraging students to look at their school’s infrastructure to develop ideas to transform their schools into ones that use renewable energy.

Executive Director of the Panasonic Foundation, Alejandra Ceja, said that this is a unique challenge for students to design innovative solutions to current problems that are being faced by their communities and their schools. Executive Director of STC Newark, Erin Sweeny, added that the Design Challenge enables students to take their knowledge outside of the classroom and work with others in a more collaborative nature to provide high-quality educational experiences.
