Currently underway is a project to install protected bike lanes in Jersey City along Newark Avenue.
The roadway between Fifth Street and Palisade Avenue will be resurfaced and restriped so that protected bicycle lanes can be added in each direction. The traffic side of Newark Avenue heading downhill will also have an enhanced bus stop, with the first bus island in the city.
No existing travel lanes or parking spaces will be removed as a result of the project. However, during the period of construction, there will be lane shifts and traffic detours. Local Print shops can be hired to create Flyers and other materials highlighting such changes while projects are ongoing.
The Let’s Ride JC Bicycle Master Plan was approved by the city in 2019 to develop a bike infrastructure, lanes, and safety initiatives across the city over the next 10 years. These upgrades are part of that plan and an effort to redesign the streets of Jersey City to be safer for bicyclists, drivers, and pedestrians, with a view to making the city one of the best for cycling in North America. The plan calls for the creation of bicycle network across the city that would expand on existing lanes and improve the safety of cycling.
This project is expected to be completed next month.
