What's Happening in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ…

Hohokus area outing to explore toxic plants

Mother Nature offers plants a variety of ways of protecting themselves from being eaten, and those that are toxic to people will be under scrutiny at a Hohokus area outdoor activity.

Poisonous plants will be the topic of a walk coming up at Lorrimer Sanctuary, and species that can be found in New Jersey will be on the list. Weeds, garden plants, and native varieties will all be discussed. All ages are welcome, but children must have an adult along with them.

The facilitators of the guided walk will point out the various poisonous plants encountered by the group and share stories about their history, along with some cautionary tales. Nightshades, bleeding hearts, foxgloves, and others will be discussed, and everyone will find out how the toxic properties of some, such as foxgloves, have historically been used medicinally for the benefit of humans and still are today. Both New Jersey Audubon members and non-members are encouraged to take part.

Learning about nature can be easier and more enjoyable as part of a group. A flyer printing company can supply a variety of marketing options for an activity, with many being budget friendly.

Those who would like to discover how plants fend for themselves are invited to register now for this in-person session. It will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 1.
