Westfield receives grant for library funding

Although area libraries provide their services to the local community for free, those services do come at a cost.

Union County recently awarded grants to 20 libraries in municipalities across the county. One of those libraries is in Westfield.

Funding for the grants comes from the Union County Kids Recreation Trust Fund and is from non-tax dollars. The grant money is meant to go towards children's programs at the respective libraries.

Every municipality that applied for funding for 2018 received it. The grant amount was the same for each of the libraries: $3,750.

Libraries that receive grant money can use Stationery printers to let patrons know how the funding will be used. Westfield Library plans on putting the grant money to use funding programs such as Mad Science. The money will also go towards the purchase of Books, computer equipment, SAT prep and other activities.

The Library Grant program was started by Bette Jane Kowalski, a Freeholder for the county, in 2016. In a press release, Kowalski stated that:

“The Library Grant program helps to ensure that public libraries in Union County have the resources to foster a contemporary learning environment for the next generation. Up-to-date programming and equipment is especially important in terms of helping children to prepare for careers in STEM and related fields.”

The grant program also supports the "Moving Union County Forward 'Plant a Seed'" initiative, which aims to encourage giving back, lifelong learning and empowerment.
