Wilmingtons first Tropicana Supermarkets to open

A North Carolina-based international grocery chain plans to open its first Wilmington location at one of the city’s busiest intersections at Oleander Drive and College Road.

Property records for New Hanover County show that the CEO of Tropicana Supermarkets, Chris Gutierrez, acquired the former Kimbrell’s Furniture building for their new location for $5.4 million in April 2025. The 43,516-square-foot building will be sharing the corner with Walgreens, Dunkin Donuts, Trader Joe’s and CVS Pharmacy.

Grocery stores utilize Print shops for not only their banner printing services to announce grand openings, but also to Print weekly ads and Posters.

The Wilmington store will be its sixth location and will offer a variety of items not available at Whole Foods or Harris Teeter. Like Asian Life Market, World Market, African Caribbean Market, Asian Life Market, and New Saigon International Market, Tropicana carries a wide range of international foods. Wilmington residents will have access to foods from North American, Mexican, Central American, South American, Asia and Africa along with a produce and a full-service meat counter.

Going east from the proposed Tropicana location, at 5400 Oleander Drive there are plans for the opening of a new restaurant. That location, which has been purchased by a Flying Machine Brewing Co. co-founder, was formerly occupied by the Hops Supply Co.

No timeline has been announced for the opening of the new Tropicana Supermarket, for now the nearest location is in Clinton.
