Next month, the skies will once again light up for Wilmington’s primary annual fall festival, but not in the same way as it has in the past. This year, drones will be replacing fireworks.
On the Saturday night of the two-day event, all eyes will be on the skies over Downtown Wilmington to witness a new addition to the festival. Originated in 1979 as a means of drawing crowds to the city’s downtown area, the city has traditionally had a fireworks display, when the weather cooperated. This year, due to cost restraints, the decision was made to try something different – a lighted drone show.

A post on the city’s Facebook page announcing the switch initially drew some comments from those disappointed with the news, but the tide soon turned with many expressing their excitement about the change. Among the reasons residents backed the change was how much easier the quieter light drone show would be on those who have difficulty with loud noises, such as some of those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), autism, and dementia, as well as small children and pets.
The best viewing location for the Open Sky Drone Show will be on the Wilmington River Walk. Riverfest takes place this year on October 5 and 6, with the drone show taking place on October 5 at 8:30 pm.Get a Free Quote for Promotional Products
