Local organization Montana HOSA - Future Healthcare Professionals opened a new chapter in Billings Central High School this year, and has announced that it is already making a difference in people’s lives.
HOSA is an organization that operates internationally and gives students the opportunity to engage in educational projects. These projects are designed to be a way for the students to get involved in the healthcare industry while they build their leadership skills. Most of the projects with which the students are involved include volunteer work.
The club advisor of the Central High Chapter and teacher of physiology, Krista Cunningham, commented:
“Students can start to see themselves in this career field, start to build skills to be successful in healthcare, begin to network with colleges and healthcare facilities, build résumé and job-seeking skills, and become leaders in our community.”
Cunningham also said that the chapter exceeded her expectations. The new club started at the beginning of the school year and after she got the idea to open a local chapter after a school trip to Yellowstone. She ran the idea by her superiors and the club’s current vice president decided to help her make it happen. Poster printing can be used to promote such new clubs.
The school needed a minimum of six students to sign up in order for the chapter to become official. To Cunningham’s surprise, more the 30 people signed up at the start and it now has 70 members.
