UrbArts expands its program into Old North St. Louis

UrbArts, the St. Louis organization that aims to use art to help with the betterment of community and the development of youth, has announced that it will be expanding into a new 2,300 sq ft storefront venue in the Crown Square district within Old North St. Louis.

Known for its open mic and poetry sessions on Friday nights at Legacy Books and Café, UrbArts will host its grand opening at the new venue on Saturday, June 21st. Billy Bill will begin the event with a gallery talk starting at 5pm; two championship VerbQuake Youth Poetry Slam teams, Gateway STEM, and K-Word from Kirkwood High School will be featured at an 8pm ticketed event. MK Stallings, founder of the organization, said:

“Our grand opening is a sampling of some of the events we’ll offer at UrbArts.

“From art exhibitions and talks to special evening performances, this is our way to expand how we serve St. Louisans throughout the region.”

UrbArts will also launch a fundraising drive named ‘Rent Party’. Similar to the events during the years of the Harlem Renaissance, artists will lend their time and talents to help UrbArts raise funds to cover rent and other related business expenses for a year. UrbArts board president Aireez DaRychuss said:

“We plan to contribute to the revitalization efforts within the neighborhood through community-building programs-based arts and culture.”

Upcoming events will be advertised with flyer printing and other communications. Contact UrbArts directly for tickets or with questions.
