To celebrate Earth Day this year, the Rock Road Branch Library in St. Ann is preparing a special event to make recycling fun and help teach children how to sort trash.
‘Earth Day: Recycling Relay Race’ is a combination of physical and Earth-friendly activity. The event will be held outside the library, where a full set of recycle bins will be set up.
The bins will be color coded and also labelled ‘plastic’, ‘paper’, and ‘cans’. Children participating will then be separated into teams of four or five and given an armband to indicate which team they are on. On the grass, pieces of recyclable trash - such as old Calendars, tin cans, and soda bottles - will be strewn about.
When the whistle blows, the first member of each team has to run out, find a piece of trash, correctly sort it into the right bin, and then get back to their team so the next teammate can go. Teams will be given one point per correctly sorted piece of trash, so the race rewards both athletic prowess and recycling knowledge.
After the relay race, small prizes will be given to the winners, as well as some treats for all the participants. Then, the children will learn a little bit more about the recycling process and the importance of sorting trash.
The event will be held on April 22 at 2:00 pm at the Rock Road Branch Library, located at 10267 St. Charles Rock Rd. The event is free for all children ages seven and up. Anyone interested in more information should visit the website.Get a Free Quote for Calendars
