Area seeks to revitalize downtown neighborhoods

Plans are underway to redevelop the neighborhoods of Covenant Blu-Grand Center and Vandeventer in the center of St. Louis.

These neighborhoods span just under three miles, have about 5,500 residents, and include sections of the Grand Center Arts District, which is a hub for museums and the performing arts. Should such plans receive approval and go forward, residents of nearby St. Ann may look to pay these areas a visit.

Funding for planning these projects is made possible with a grant from the Deaconess Foundation in the amount of $300,000.

The primary features of the plan include:

• Strengthening the shopping centers in the area
• Revitalizing Martin Luther King Drive and Delmar Boulevard
• Building small parks of a residential nature to attract more investment and residents
• Expanding the Grand Arts Center District by building multiuse development to connect to the neighborhoods surrounding the District
• Preserving historic properties and documenting the history of the area
• Encouraging more medical professionals to set up practices in the area around the Cochran VA Medical Center on North Grand Boulevard

The Planning and Urban Design Agency of the city will review the plans and then hold town hall meetings with residents and most of the groups and institutions in the neighborhoods. Taking place over the coming months, these consultation will help garner feedback and viewpoints.
