An expansion of the munitions and missile plant of the Boeing Co. is planned for the north side of St. Charles and the additional employment opportunities will likely benefit nearby St. Ann too.
A spokeswoman for Boeing, Sarah Reed, said that the expansion will provide for a skilled workforce and a secure operation and production now and in the future. The expansion is expected to cost $70 million with a tax abatement incentive of $18 million spread over 20 years to assist with the funding.
Construction of the new building will take place on the northeast corner of its existing plant site and will begin later this year. The expected completion date is 2021. Banner printing at such sites can be used to keep the community informed of the progress of such expansion projects.
In addition, Boeing will use about 110 acres of property owned by the city north of the site for its expansion. Boeing also entered an agreement with the city so that the city will be paid by the company to restrict the use of the land and enable the company to provide a fence around it.
Mayor Dan Borgmeyer said that proceeds from the agreement may go towards the development of park land in other parts of the city.
