What's Happening in Olivette, MO…

Volunteers go to war on honeysuckle

Olivette will be doing its part to battle against invasive honeysuckle, and is asking for volunteers to help in the effort.

The event is being called ‘Operation Wild Lands Honeysuckle Hack and Planting on the Centennial Greenway’, and will require people to give up three hours of their time.

The event is being sponsored by the Great Rivers Greenway, working with The Open Space Council. Volunteers will help by removing the bush honeysuckle plant's invasive roots, and planting more desirable plants native to Missouri.

The work is scheduled to be done at the trail head in Shaw Park, along the Centennial Greenway. The work the volunteers do will make it simpler for the Great Rivers-Open Space team to continue planting native species, as well as enhancing the habitat for wildlife, and creating a healthier, better environment for everyone.

The team will provide volunteers with necessary gloves, tools, water, and snacks. The volunteers are asked to dress appropriately for the weather, and to wear sturdy shoes. Everyone age 15 and older is welcome, but adults must accompany those under 18.

The honeysuckle hack is slated for November 7, from 9:00 am until noon. Volunteers are asked to park in the CoinCo lot at 300 Hunter Avenue. Event organizers could work with a postcard printing company on a card announcing the event, to be mailed to area residents.
