Columbia prepares for sweet tweet

Ryan Schultz’s Christmas light display has proved to be a major draw for the past seven years running, and this year may his most successful one yet.

Dubbed the ‘Candy Cane Crib’, the display features 45,000 lights in red, green and white. When fully lit, the El Cortez Drive home shines like a beacon, and people bring their families from all over the area to help spread Christmas cheer.

The lights came on for the first time at 6:00 pm Tuesday, and already hundreds of Columbia residents have come to visit Schultz’s home, where their children can “pick” free candy canes from his “garden” and take photographs with loved ones.

Schultz’s family also gets into the display, with his son and wife handing out sugary treats and posing for pictures. There is even a professional sign Schultz likely had made at a local Print company, which features a cozy-looking peppermint logo and reads “established 2009”, implying there will be many more years of the Candy Cane Crib to come.
Schulz explained:

“I want people to come and enjoy it as much as I do. I just hope the neighbors are OK with it. We’ll see.”

Candy Cane Crib will be lit from 5:30 pm until 11:00 pm every night leading up until New Year’s Day. While there will not always be somebody home, Schultz invites anyone who would like to come and enjoy the lights free of charge.
