Barred owls are one of the most common species of these nocturnal hunting birds to call the Columbia area home, and an upcoming event may make it easier for them to raise a family.
Sawdust Studios has scheduled a class that will teach the basics of woodworking by constructing a nesting box for barred owls. Full assistance will be provided, and ticketholders will not need to bring anything other than a willingness to learn and a desire to help wildlife.
The attendees will measure and cut the wood for their project, and they will then assemble their finished piece. It was explained that these will give owls a safe site to nest, and everyone is welcome, even if they have no previous woodworking experience. They will learn how to site their nest box so that it stands a high chance of attracting some new occupants.
Learning some new skills can be particularly enjoyable as part of a group. Workshops provide this sort of experience, and materials for these events can be prepared by area Stationery printers.
This chance to give barred owls a helping hand and have fun doing so is set for Tuesday, April 11. It will be kicking off at 6:30 pm at 2207 Nelwood Drive. The class will run for two and half hours.
