Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced recently that over $20 million in grants would be dispersed to 34 counties, townships and cities across the state, with Princeton being among the recipients.
The Small Cities Development Program (SCDP) grants, which are to be used to fund updating public infrastructure, the rehabilitation of commercial buildings and housing in small communities, will be administered by DEED, the state’s Department of Employment and Economic Development. The grants are part of HUD’s Community Development Block Grant Program.

Counties with less than 200,000 residents and townships and cities with less than 50,000 people are eligible to apply for SCDP grants with the stipulation that the money be used for projects eliminating “slum and blighted” conditions, benefiting low and moderate-income residents or eliminating an urgent public safety threat.
The $20,820,999 in grant money will be dispersed among 34 communities with the City of Hendricks/Gavin receiving the largest sum, $1,198,325, for rental rehabilitation, owner-occupied housing and public facility improvements. The community receiving the smallest amount will be the City of Maynard, which will be given $115,000 for rental rehabilitation.
The $600,000 coming to the City of Princeton is about the average amount received by Minnesota communities and is to be used for public facility improvements.
