Princeton elementary school children will soon get a new flag to draw, and by all accounts it will be much easier to duplicate than the state’s current flag.
A commission appointed by the state Legislature with the mission of finding a new Minnesota state flag, recently, after reviewing 2,100 submissions, have come up with six finalists. The group also sought designs for a new seal and received over 2,600 submissions.
Stationery printers often are asked to include state emblems or seals on official state stationery.
Minnesota's population has been closely following the search for a new flag and state seal. The amount of interest in the Minnesota flag redesign and a state seal is not too surprising as Minnesota residents have historically been known for their high-level of civic engagement.
The state bird, a loon, made an appearance in many of the flag designs; however, none of the flag finalists included a one. The finalist for the new state seal, that will replace the one adopted in 1859, will, however, feature a loon.
Other popular flag design features included the state’s motto “L’etoile du Nord” – the North Star and snowflakes.
The commission has until January 1, 2024, to submit a final flag design for approval to the governor and state legislature. The plan is to officially unveil the new flag May 11, 2024, for Minnesota’s 166th birthday.
