Princeton anglers will be happy to know that the state’s DNR has eased their regulations on the number of walleyes they can keep per day from Minnesota’s largest lake. This year’s easement of walleye limits is attributed to the increased population of the species due to years of catch-and-release restrictions.

Harvest limits for the Lake are determined jointly by the Ojibwe treaty tribes and the DNR. Beginning May 10 fishermen will be able to take home two walleye per day through November 30. Qualifying fish for keeping must be over 17 inches with only one fish exceeding 20 inches. According to Brian Nerbonne, the DNR’s regional fisheries manager:
“More people are going to show up to Mille Lacs this year — the opportunity to harvest two fish, it's going to be of interest to a lot of people."
Minnesota’s state fish, the walleye feed on, among other fish, cisco and yellow perch and an increase in their numbers has been a contributing factor in the resurgence of the walleye’s numbers. As a result, the daily yellow perch limit has been reduced at the lake from 20 to five.
