Mandated paid sick leave proposed

Princeton workers may see a welcome benefit coming their way thanks to new state legislature; a bill mandating almost all Minnesota employees guaranteed sick leave has been introduced by state Rep. Liz Olson.

If a bill proposed by Olson makes it through the legislature and is voted into law, then “sick and safe time” would be guaranteed up to 48 hours per year. This would be a boon for the approximately one third of Minnesota employees whose employers are not already supplying the benefit.

Rep. Olson, along with Melissa Hortman, the house speaker, recently discussed the bill at a news conference held at the State Capitol in St. Paul. She explained that over 900,000 employees in Minnesota presently do not receive paid time off when they or their loved ones need care.

Printing services can create materials to assist in inducing companies and workers to relocate to the area, especially if there are benefits for employees to enjoy.

If the bill passes, workers would be guaranteed that for every 30 hours worked, they will receive an hour of paid leave up to 48 hours a year. A maximum of 80 hours could be carried over from one year to the next. The earned time off could be used for mental or physical illness, preventative care or treatment, family member care, or absences due to domestic abuse, stalking or sexual assault.

The paid time off could also be used for work missed due to public emergencies, weather closures, or quarantine.
