Funding acquired for arts co-op drive in

The East Central Regional Arts Council recently awarded $7,798 to the Central Minnesota Arts Co-op to help realize a dream. The co-op wants to bring back memories of drive-in theatres with a rendition of a drive-in screen on the 108 Sixth Ave. S building.

Wendy Bursch, co-op director, told the Princeton Union-Eagle that the Arts Council funded the co-op’s entire request. Marv’s True Value has also stated that it will match 10% of the art council’s award with its own donation.

Plans called for the mural painting to begin last week on the north wall of the arts co-op building. The finished mural will be 107ft-by-22ft, and will represent a 1950s-era drive-in movie theater. The screen in the mural will be an actual movie screen, 8ft high by 16ft wide, which the arts co-op will use to show movies from the parking lot. An events and information marquee will also be incorporated into the mural, according to Bursch. Further, events will be advertised through Posters and other printing services.

Local art teacher and artist Amy Cunningham is the creative mind behind the project. She also created the Faces of Minnesota project, which is a series of paintings created from pre-1960s photos either set in Minnesota, or featuring Minnesotans. A group of local teen artists, called the Art Monkeys, will join community members and Cunningham to actually create the painting. An open house to unveil the mural is scheduled for August 14th.
